MILWAUKEE, WI – United Milwaukee Scrap LLC welcomed Mayor Tom Barrett and other prominent guests on Monday, August 6 as the City of Milwaukee received a check for $25,000 for winning first place in the national “Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge,” sponsored by Novelis and the US Conference of Mayors. This is Milwaukee’s 7th first-place win in the contest. Over a four-week period this spring, over 39 million aluminum cans were collected for recycling, saving over 1,700 cubic yards of landfill space and the energy equivalent of nearly 1.8 million gallons of gas.  United Milwaukee Scrap assisted the city in its collection and weighing efforts.

Since the contest began in 2004, Milwaukee recyclers have collected over 300 million cans, saving the energy equivalent of almost 15 million gallons of gasoline.  The award will be used to fund recycling education in the community, according to the city.

“We are proud to have such a thriving green economy here in Milwaukee,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. “Companies such as United Milwaukee Scrap not only increase the sustainability of our city through recycling which conserves resources, saves landfill space and reduces pollution, but they also provide our community with family-supporting jobs. United Milwaukee Scrap is a valuable member of our community.”

Other notable guests present included Rick Meyers, Recycling Specialist City of Milwaukee DPW; Preston Cole, Director of Operations, City of Milwaukee DPW; Laura Dudebout, Specialist, North America Communications for Novelis Inc.; and Judy Sheehan, Assistant Executive Director, The U.S. Conference of Mayors.
